Dedicated to the memory of all the men and women of the Bridgnorth area who died during the two World Wars.

List of The Fallen

This list appeared in the Bridgnorth Journal on 14th Aug, 1920.
Throughout the early years of the war the Bridgnorth Journal printed lists of men who had volunteered for the Services. Soldiers were requested to leave their details at the paper's office before leaving for the war. Composite lists of the volunteers were published in the paper at the end of 1914 and 1915. Later, a Mr Willis maintained lists of the town's war casualties.
I presume that the list below is based on the newspaper's own records, probably combined with Mr Willis's. It is very similar to the list of names finally used on the Castle Gardens War Memorial.
The list is important as it often gives more details of the units in which the men served than survive elsewhere. In most cases the surviving official records only record the battalion in which a man was serving at the time of his death, whereas the List of the Fallen gives unit detail down to company level.
The compilers were not always able to keep the list fully up to date. In some cases information is very thin - presumably where the compilers had lost contact with the man's family and friends. As a result, the details given on the list do not always agree with the official record. Whilst the differences may sometimes indicate errors, they often seem to record information about earlier postings which do not survive in the official records (the detailed service records of most men were destroyed by bombing in WW2).
