Dedicated to the memory of all the men and women of the Bridgnorth area who died during the two World Wars.
William Richard Moore was born early in 1890 at Dilwyn, Herefordshire. He was the son of Richard Moore, an agricultural labourer, and his wife, Elizabeth. The family lived at Haven, Dilwyn.
In 1911 William was working as a farm servant at Lower Green, Pembridge. At some time after this he moved to Chelmarsh where he was living when he enlisted in the army at Bridgnorth.
William served in the 1/1st Battalion Herefordshire Regiment. This regiment had fought at Gallipoli, but by the time William joined it, it had moved to Egypt. During 1917 the regiment was involved in the three battles of Gaza. William was killed in action on 6th November, 1917, during the Capture of Tell Khuweilfe (part of the Third Battle of Gaza). He is buried in Beersheba War Cemetery.
Private William Moore, 238881, Herefordshire Regiment, was awarded the Victory and British War Medals.
