AB Frederick Smith died during Operation Husky, the Allied invasion of Sicily which took place 9 July - 17 August 1943. HMS Hamilcar was a Combined Operations shore base housed in a requisitioned convent at Djedjelli [Djijelli/Jijel?], Algeria.
